Moreover, such holiness is not a human work but, rather, Gods work, a work of Divine Mercy rushing down to the lowest place. And as Aristode righdy pointed out long ago, true friendship requires a kind of equality and mutuality it cant be one-sided.206 So, let me ask you: Have you ever had a friendship where you shared with your friend but he or she never shared with you? Remember that image? DAY 1 Eve of Darkness4 We begin in the beginning with Eve and the fall of humanity, the Eve who reveals the opposite of trust, the Eve who caused die time of darkness. But with Thereses trial of faith, the challenge of trusting became not just about her own darkness (the darkness of her lit tleness) but about a deeper darkness that attacked the very goal of her faith, hope, and love. And w hen the Son became incarnate, when the Word became flesh, he became like us in all things but sin.198 Alright, but what gets to die essence of what he became? Well, its when God doesnt pass us like the priest and Levite but, rather, like the Samaritan, comes to us where we are, sees our weakness, brokenness, and misery, and then acts to heal us and bring us to a place of comfort and rest.
